History of the Mullan Trail
One of the most impressive landmarks in the United States is the Mullan Trail. This 624 mile long road tying Ft. Walla Walla in Washington and Ft. Benton in Montana, was built in the mid 1800’s by Lt. John Mullan, an army trained engineer. Although built for military intent to deliver supplies to Ft. Walla Walla, the Mullan Trail was also heavily traveled by civilians. Civilian travel was primarily homesteaders, gold rushers, and according to one record, a merchant with a band of camels delivering supplies into Montana. The Mullan Trail was the first engineered road in Montana, and arguably the first in the Pacific Northwest. On October 28, 1978, the American Society of Engineers dedicated the Mullan Trail as a National Historic Engineering Landmark. We find evidence of the Mullan Trail still today, as it makes up in part much of Interstate 90. A section of the Mullan Trail runs through Missoula, Montana, although the name has been altered to Mullan Road.
